Click on a shape to select it and apply it to your image. These options exist in Google Drawings as well. There are a lot of questions about this same issue, but none with a response from Google.

I love Google Slides for so many reasons beyond a presentation tool. We suggest developers to use alternative text for finding a specific shape. For this example, I used this image I found on Google Images.
